The Cork Road Clinic Practice History

The Cork Road Clinic can trace its roots back to dispensary system of health care dating back to the 19th century.  Dr. Michael Barry, the founding professional of the modern Cork Road Clinic was the last in a long line of dispensary doctors beginning with Dr. Sandiford in  about 1880.  Dr Ryan succeeded him in the early 20th century and later he was succeded by Dr. McCabe.  In 1962 dr Barry was appointed Dispensary Doctor for Glantane, expanding to the West End in mallow in 1964.  Dr. Barry, the founding father of the Cork Road Clinic, had graduated from University College Cork in 1947.  After a successful period in Stoke on Trent in England, he returned to fill the dispensary post in Glantane.  Over the years he established a very successful practice with a growing cohort of patients, attracted by his warm humanity and clinical expertise.  In 1989, Dr. Tony Heffernan, who had grown up in the area, joined Dr. Barry in practice.  The practice continued to flourish, mindful of the patient-centred ethos established under Dr. Barry.  In 1993, larger premises were occupied on the Cork Road and when Dr. Betty Hyde joined the practice later that year, the Cork Road Clinic was born.

Due to the increasing demand for the services of the Cork Road clinic the original building on the Cork Road was upgraded in 2003. In 2004 a large, modern, purpose built extension incorporating 8 surgery rooms was completed. This was officially opened on the 24th September 2004 by Mr. Micheal Martin TD, the then Minister for Health and Children.

Dr. Baldassini joined the team in 2008, as the first sod was being turned on the construction of the Mallow Primary Healthcare Centre, the current location of the Cork Road Clinic since May 2010.  The practice continues to flourish in its new home, the Mallow Primary Healthcare Centre (www.mphc.ie).  We pride ourselves on having a patient centred ethos, aiming to deliver world class primary care in a compassionate manner.

The Cork Road Clinic prides itself on delivering excellence in care.  We strive to treat patients holistically, recognising that they are part of a larger family, community and society.  Although we pride ourselves on providing evidence based medical care and disease management, we place the patient at the centre of all we do.
